OTP Bank owner Sándor Csányi is the wealthiest Hungarian, Gattyán is the second

The third one on the list is pro-government Lőrinc Mészáros whose interests win construction public procurements one after the other and who buys companies in almost every sector of the Hungarian economy, from tourism to catering or maintenance. Last year, it was István Tiborcz who suddenly popped up on the list and immediately arrived in its upper third. In 2020, it was József Vida, the owner of the channel TV2. Péter Szakonyi collected the 100 wealthiest Hungarians.

Lőrinc Mészáros‘s estimated fortune is worth 270 billion HUF (EUR 778 million), but that sum was only enough for the third place on the list of the wealthiest Hungarians, 24 reported. He lost 26 billion HUF because of the crisis, for example, because the Hunguest hotels had to close for months. However, he already received 17.7 billion HUF from the state as non-refundable financial support that he can spend on the renovation of his hotels. Furthermore, Mészáros’s construction companies won 400 billion HUF (EUR 1.15 billion) on public procurements last year. Moreover, they received the giant project of the Budapest-Belgrade railway line upgrade which cost 2 billion dollars and was

classified by the parliament in May.

Sándor Csányi lost 50 billion HUF because of the crisis, but he still has an estimated wealth worth 310 billion HUF, which allows him to stand on the top of the list as he has for the past 10 years.

György Gattyán is the third with 280 billion HUF. The website is the 36th most visited in the world, having 40-45 million visitors per day.

Dániel Jedlinek is a newcomer in the top ten having interests in the real estate sector and tourism. His Indotek group has more than 20 malls. Moreover, the 43-year-old businessman’s fortune grew

from 65.5 billion to 115 billion in only one year.

László Bige lost the most in the top ten because of the crisis (58 billion HUF), but he still has 112 billion HUF and interests in mostly the agriculture sector.

Gellért Jászai is not in the top ten but, in 2019, he was only 97th with 10 billion HUF while currently, he has 20 billion, so he doubled his money. Mr Jászai was a business partner of Mr Mészáros but started his own company, the 4iG Nyrt., in the informatics sector and became very successful, but it has to be stated that he also wins a lot of public procurements.

The son-in-law of the Hungarian PM, István Tiborcz, remained in 32nd place. Interestingly, there was only one person who forbade his name to be revealed, but 24 thinks that he is Gyula Balásy whose

communication company wins all tenders in that field in Hungary.

The only woman on the list is Mária Schmidt whose family (e.g. his son, Péter Ungár, who is currently an opposition MP) has 59 billion HUF.

Interestingly, the wealth of József Váradi, CEO of WizzAir, decreased significantly because of the crisis, from 33.5 billion HUF to 11 billion.

The most influential Hungarian is PM Vitkor Orbán again. He is followed by Sándor Csányi, Lőrinc Mészáros, and György Matolcsy, president of the Central Bank of Hungary. Interior minister Sándor Pintér and minister for finances Mihály Varga follow them.
